Get a free host for ColorPerfect - Photoshop CS2 is available for download from Adobe at no charge

The following information might be very useful for existing and future users of ColorPerfect but please understand that Adobe does not offer product support for these downloads and that what you do with this information is your own responsibility.

On January 8th 2013 something very interesting happened. After Adobe had put the activation servers for all of their CS2 products out of service as of December 13th 2012 due to a technichal glitch (as they claim on their blog) they made the whole CS2 product line including Photoshop CS2 available to their customers using a static serial number per product.

They might have done that because the activation services could not be recovered and all of us who bought CS2 back in its day can since no longer activate the software using our actual serial numbers. Neither internet nor phone activation work anymore. That probably posed a legal problem for Adobe, we did buy unrestricted licenses without any 'end of life' as they call it. At first they seem to have released their static serial number solution to the problem on an internal page requiring existing customers to log-in using their Adobe IDs.

On January 8th 2013 Adobe decided to put all of this onto public web pages which makes Photoshop CS2 freely available to everyone who cares to get it. There were reports on this on January 7th but the reported pages were quickly offline again and there was a dementi from Adobe but then a day later the download pages were back and we'll list the links to the public download pages we found on this public Adobe Help page below.

On the aforementioned blog post Adobe sais 'While this might be interpreted as Adobe giving away software for free, we did it to help our customers', so while Adobe does not confirm that this software is being given away for free to everyone they also don't deny it. Whether they intend to help or to give the software away for free matters little as long as they don't restrict their downloads in any way. You'll have to sort out for yourself though what it means legally when major software makers like Adobe offer their old products along with a serial number on their public web page.

Are the Adobe Creative Suite 2 downloads legal or are they not?

There is a funny controversy developing in some of the posts on this subject you'll find on various forums and web pages. On the one hand people approached Adobe complaining that they paid thousands of dollars for this software and that it's freely available now. To calm this down Adobe representatives have said on such forums that of course the software is only intended for those who did previously buy a license. On the other hand intentions declared on forums are pretty irrelevant. There is no clear official statement, the blog post we quoted above is totally ambiguous and the actual download pages continue to be public and completely devoid of any such purpose declaration. There are no extra conditions for you agree to in order to download the software or to see its static serial numbers. The EULA you are presented when installing the software sais 'If you obtained the Software from Adobe or one of its authorized licensees and as long as you comply with the terms of this agreement, Adobe grants you a non-exclusive license to use the Software in the manner and for the purposes described in the Documentation, as further set forth below.' It says nothing about having purchased the software except where it comes to warranty, transferability of licenses and the like but as we pointed out before you'll have to sort out what all of this means legally for yourself.

These downloads might be gone anytime so save whatever you need before the offer gets pulled again

From past experience we recommend you to get a copy of anything you're interested in because offers like this one generally are subject to change and might as well get pulled altogether later. Should the above links cease to work sometime you might want to try visiting them using www.archive.org's way back machine to see them as they looked after January 8th 2013.

We know that Photoshop CS2 existed in these languages. It was on the Production Studio Premium multi language installer disk set we bought back when CS2 was current. If you own a license of Photoshop CS2 in either language - which you won't be able to activate anymore as it seems - you'll have to contact your local Adobe customer service to have them solve that problem for you.

Windows operating systems supported by Photoshop CS2: Windows XP through Windows 8

The Photoshop CS2 stand alone installer offered by Adobe officially supported Windows 2000 and Windows XP but it can be installed on Windows Vista, 7 and 8 in both their 32-Bit and 64-Bit versions without any problems. For the other CS2 products offered that might well be different, we only tried Photoshop CS2 with Win 7 and 8. There have been reports that the Creative Suite CS2 installer causes trouble there while the stand alone installers work fine.

Photoshop CS2's OS X support: 10.4 (natively), 10.5 and 10.6 (maybe using Rosetta), virtual Windows

On the Mac Photoshop CS2 was the last version compiled for Power PC processors so this might be much less interesting than the Windows version. Photoshop CS2 for OS X runs natively on OS X 10.4 Tiger which we officially support. With Apple's Rosetta emulation software it might also run on Intel Macs using OS X 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard. We do not officially support Rosetta installations for ColorPerfect. There have been repots of problems involving Rosetta that could not be reproduced on actual Power PCs. You are free to experiment but please note that while we are interested in hearing about any problems you encounter there is absolutely no guarantee that any of them will be solved in future releases. Rosetta is not included in either Lion or Mountain Lion so Photoshop CS2 for OS X won't work there.

The best thing to do for those using either of the Lions might be getting a free virtualization software like virtual box, installing any Windows version starting with Windows XP as a virtual machine and to use Photoshop CS2 in that. Probably this is even worthwhile on OS X 10.5 and OS X 10.6 since the Windows version of Photoshop CS2 has been compiled for the Intel platform rather than for the Power PC.

Not supported by CameraRAW? ColorPerfect adds support for hundreds of digital cameras to Photoshop CS2

While it was developed to solve problems inherent to all current digital imaging systems and thus to greatly improve color quality and flexibility ColorPerfect's PerfectRAW does something more down-to-earth for Photoshop CS2, too: It adds the Camera support Adobe never added to the Adobe Camera RAW 3.x that shipped with Photoshop CS2. They use the support of new cameras as a sales proposition for upgrades where we don't. Our philosophy is different in that respect. We have never charged anyone for upgrades to begin with.

All you need to do to use PerfectRAW is drop any RAW file on our auxiliary program MakeTiff, open the resulting Tiff with Photoshop and process it with ColorPerfect where you'll tick the PerfectRAW checkbox. The general workflow for this will need some learning but after a while you will really be astonished what you can do with it - beyond what you ever could with other software.

Adobe Creative Suite 2 was a capable collection of powerful design tools, released in 2005. The main components included Adobe Photoshop (photo editing), Adobe Illustrator (vector graphics editing), Adobe InDesign (desktop publishing) and Adobe Version Cue (version control), while Adobe Bridge helped to link everything together.

Unsurprisingly, the suite isn't as leading edge as it was at release, but the programs do still have their uses. And, as Adobe has now made them available for free, you can now try out these old industry standards for yourself.

Be aware, this won't be for everyone. These are old programs, intended for use on Windows 2000/ XP and Mac OS X v.10.2.8–v.10.3.8 (PowerPC® G4 or G5 processor). We've managed to install CS2 on a 64-bit Windows 7 system, but this is unsupported and there's no telling what issues might crop up.

If you'd like just to try, though, here's what to do. Follow the download link to open a page at the Adobe site, and at a minimum download CreativeSuiteCS2Disc1.exe, CreativeSuiteCS2Disc2.exe and CreativeSuiteCS2Disc3.exe from the links at the top of the page (that's a bulky 1.07GB in total, so choose a system with a fast internet connection).

Run CreativeSuiteCS2Disc3.exe, make a note of the default extraction folder (it was C:Creative Suite CS2 for us), and click Next > Finish.

Run CreativeSuiteCS2Disc2.exe, change the default extraction folder name to whatever it was for the previous file, and click Next > Finish.

Run CreativeSuiteCS2Disc1.exe. The extraction folder should be the same as it was for the Disc3 file, but change it if not, and click Next. (The aim of all this being that all the CS2 content should end up in the same folder.)

The installer will appear. Click Next and accept the licence agreement.

The 'Personalization' screen then asks for your registration details. Enter your name, (optionally) company, and the serial number 1130-0412-8377-1896-9751-5759 (you can paste this from the clipboard).

Next, the installer asks where to install Creative Suite 2. By default this was C:Program Files (x86)Adobe on our Windows 7 x64 system, but it immediately complained that 'The path your selected for installation contains unsupported characters'. This is misleading; the real problem is just that the installer is using a long file name. Manually enter C:Progra~1Adobe as the folder name on 32-bit Windows, C:Progra~2Adobe on a 64-bit system, press Tab > Next and all should be well.

Adobe Cs2 Mac Requirements

You then get to choose to install some, or all of the suite's components. Your options are Adobe Illustrator CS2 (600MB), Adobe InDesign CS2 (400MB), Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe ImageReady CS2 (450MB), and Adobe Version Cue CS2 (300MB).

We opted for the 'Entire Suite' option, and clicked Next.

A Summary screen appears listing all the choices you've made so far. If there's a mistake, click 'Back' and change it, otherwise click Install.

If a message appears telling you to 'Insert CD 2 to continue installation', open Explorer, and switch to the default extraction folder (we'll assume it's C:Creative Suite CS2). Manually copy the C:Creative Suite CS2Adobe InDesign CS2 and C:Creative Suite CS2Adobe Version Cue CS2 folders and their contents to C:Creative Suite CS2Adobe Creative Suite 2.0. Switch back to the installer, click OK and it should now continue.

Once installation is complete (which should only take 3 or 4 minutes, not the 'up to 20' suggested by the setup program) a Registration dialog will appear. There's no need to bother registering, really - these are free tools, you're not going to get any support running them on modern PCs anyway - so the best option is probably to choose the 'Do not register' option, and click Next > Done.

And with any luck, you should now have installed CS2. The issues may not end there, but you should at least now be able to launch and try out its various applications.

Verdict:

Installation is awkward, but if you can get CS2 working then there's still plenty of design power here (especially for free)
